AGING IN PLACE

There is no substitute for personal care

“Do what you can, with what you’ve got…while you’ve got it!”
Life can change in a heartbeat! —Chuck Oakes

Chuck is an advocate, consultant, author and speaker on matters pertaining to dignified aging. As a Certified Aging in Place Specialist, CAPS, he provides insight into respectful aging at home. His Sensory Supportive Spacesm techniques create an effective place for work, recovery or wellness.

The vast majority of families prefer to retire in their own homes, but for many, this is simply not an option. Regardless of whether in a private residence or communal setting, personal dignity and respect must be priorities.

The trends are clear; people are living longer and prefer to retire in their own homes. “Aging in place” need not be a death sentence! The challenge is to make the home safe, secure and friendly for all ages and abilities drawing upon principles of universal design blended with applied technology. However, aging in place is not always appropriate for everyone.

As a society, we must enable our families to have choices on how and where their aging loved ones can retire. The health and homecare industries should be reevaluated to ensure exceptional care and training for individuals entering into the professions. Paradigms should change as our expectations and needs change. For instance, the practice of taking a senior out of their own home and into a skilled nursing facility when the family exhausts financial resources should not be continued, especially when it is more expensive to do so and the care is not always better than in their own homes.
